I am a 34-year old head of a family with three children, and a professor at the Helsinki University of Technology. During my years in USA as a Harvard scientist I realized the strength of the Finnish society: both humane and efficient, it has not emerged without effort, but is the result of determined work over generations, yet many of its core principles are presently under peril. The perceived threat of globalization is used as the argument against the Finnish welfare society, yet I see that the strength of Finland lies in the very principles that are claimed to be our weaknesses. This got me involved in politics upon our return to Finland in 2002.
